It’s every young batsman’s dream to go out there, play for his/her country, and score a big century. However, it breaks your heart when you’re in touching distance but can’t get to that personal milestone. And that’s exactly what happened with the young and talented Shubman Gill in yesterday’s third and final ODI between West Indies and India.
With a lot of young batsmen occupying the opening slots for India across formats, the 22-year old hasn’t had too many chances in the last year and more. However, he was selected for the 2022 India tour of West Indies and opened for India in all the three ODIs as well. He began with a fifty, got another start in the 2nd ODI and in the 3rd ODI, he was brilliant but wasn’t able to complete a well-deserved milestone…
Shubman Gill misses maiden ODI century
He hit 64 in the 1st ODI and in the 2nd ODI, scored a very fine innings of 43. He had a couple of starts and wanted to convert it into a big score in the 3rd ODI. And that’s what he did with a slow and steady start, and a quick acceleration after the first rain interruption. He sped away after getting to fifty because he knew India needed to get some quick runs.
However, the ran gods decided to show up once again and play spoilsport when Gill was just two runs away from a major milestone. Playing in his 6th career ODI, it was the perfect setup for Gill to score his maiden ODI century but the rain came up again and the extended delay led to the Indian innings being called off, with Gill stranded on 98*!

He wouldn’t have showed it on his face but we know that Gill wouldn’t have been happy to walk away and that would’ve been the most annoying walk back to the pavillion he’s had in his career so far. He’s very talented and we know this won’t be the last time we’re hearing of Gill across all the formats for Team India.
He has 2 fifties so far in ODIs and in 11 Tests, he’s managed 4 fifties, so he’s yet to reach the 3-figure mark for the national side. However, it’s still early days in his international career and we’re sure to see him get there soon. Coming to the match, India put up 225/3 in their 36 overs, when they were initially supposed to play out 40 overs after the first rain delay.
If it was some compensation for Gill, he was awarded the Man of the Match for his knock and also the Man of the Series award for scoring runs in all three games of the series. Surely though, he’d prefer having the chance to get to an international ton, wouldn’t he?! India ended up winning by 119 runs (D/L method) and completing the 3-0 whitewash.
