When the Indian batsmen walked out to resume play on Day 2 of the 1st Test against New Zealand, Mumbai’s Shreyas Iyer had one major milestone on his mind and that was a Test century on debut. Not many have done it in the past and this morning, he raced towards the milestone, with no nervous nineties and most of his runs coming in boundaries in the first session.

Shreyas Iyer is 16th Indian to Get Century on Test Debut

Without a doubt, it was a very impressive first appearance in the longest format, getting to the milestone with a drive past point, coming back for two runs to reach the magical first Test century. He wasn’t even 100% sure of getting to play and may not even play in the next game, but he’s made it count. He joined a very elite list of Indian batsmen over the decades who got a century on Test debut, the last one being Prithvi Shaw who did so in 2018!

With this ton, he’ll surely be increasing his value ahead of the IPL 2022 auction where he will be going under the hammer after many years. Delhi Capitals revealed their IPL 2022 retention list yesterday and Iyer wasn’t a part of it as he didn’t want to be. We’re sure there’s going to be plenty of interest for him.

Coming back to his innings today, he was dismissed for 105, on the first ball after the drinks break and surely, his concentration would’ve taken a dip post the break. However, he made a mark and won’t forget this moment anytime soon. For more updates from the 2021 New Zealand tour of India, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
