Shikhar Dhawan Becomes Second to 6,000 IPL Runs

When you talk about batting legends in the Indian Premier League (IPL), you think of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, David Warner, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, and many more. However, not many may immediately think about left-handed opening batsman and Team India regular, Shikhar Dhawan.

Having played for several franchises like Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, and Sunrisers Hyderabad (where he did best), Dhawan moved to Punjab Kings after the IPL 2022 season where he continued his run scoring at the top of the order for this new franchise. And today, he went on to become only the second person in the history of the league to have reached the milestone of 6,000 career IPL runs!

Shikhar Dhawan Becomes Second to 6,000 IPL Runs

Shikhar Dhawan – 6,000 IPL runs!

He was likely to reach this milestone a couple of games ago but unfortunately, he had a couple of single digit scores in the build up to today’s game. Today was Match 38 of IPL 2022 where Punjab was up against defending champions Chennai Super Kings. Here, CSK put Punjab in to bat and Dhawan wasn’t going to let go of this opportunity at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

He has a brilliant record against CSK and he went on to score a fine knock of 88(59)* while also carrying his bat through the innings. On the way, he went past the absolutely amazing milestone of 6,000 career IPL runs, becoming only the second person to this landmark after the former RCB captain, Virat Kohli. He joins a very elite and exclusive IPL batting club with this knock!

On the way to this 88*, he also racked up 1,000+ runs against CSK and now holds the record for the most runs by any batter against a single IPL franchise. His knock today included 9 fours and 2 sixes and helped propel Punjab to as much as 187/4 in their quota of 20 overs. He may be aging but he’s only getting better with age, is the GABBAR!

At the start of this season, Dhawan was one of only three batters to get 1,000+ runs since the start of IPL 2020, the other two being KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis. It shows how consistent he has been right through the years and we’re sure he’ll even scale the 7,000-run barrier before he calls it a day in the Indian Premier League.

He’s come to the Punjab Kings franchise after the IPL 2022 Auction and he came here at a much lower salary than what he had at his last club – Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite the decrease pay cheque, he’s come out with equal enthusiasm and is proving to be a great asset for his new franchise as well, in IPL 2022.
