We’re one month away from the IPL 2022 Auction and maybe 2-3 months away from the season as a whole. And there’s so much to do like completing squads, assigning leadership roles, getting sponsorship rights and so on. However, BCCI is one of the biggest cricket boards in the world and these things take care of itself. Another meeting was scheduled today, 11th January 2022 to decide the title sponsor.
And as an outcome of the meeting, we’re set to see Tata Group replacing Chinese mobile manufacturer Vivo as the Indian Premier League’s title sponsor from the upcoming edition. It ends a long partnership that Vivo had with India’s biggest cricketing league and it sets a whole new example for the ‘Make in India’ movement.
Say hello to Tata IPL 2022
IPL’s governing council decided the new title sponsor in a meeting today and get ready to say bye to Vivo IPL and get used to hearing Tata IPL ringing in your ears. As per speculations, IPL was planning on dropping Vivo from the previous season itself but they ended on continuing for another year, after a temporary sponsor was found for the Dream11 IPL 2020 season.
“Yes, Tata group is coming in as IPL title sponsor,” confirmed IPL chairman, Brijesh Patel. This ends a 5-year deal between Vivo and the IPL which lasted between 2018-2022. The partnership ended briefly in 2020 after the Galwan Valley military confrontation between India and China in 2020 but the mobile giant returned for IPL 2021 and were looking for a suitable replacement to transfer the rights.

Vivo paid as much as Rs.2,200 Crore in sponsorship rights to the Indian Premier League, which amounts to as much as Rs.440 Crore per year. They replaced PepsiCo who had a deal of Rs.396 Crore and they exited in 2016. As of now, the Tata partnership details are not yet out but they’re going to be the title sponsor for just one season, post which BCCI will roll out a fresh RFP (request for proposal).
The Tata IPL 2022 auction will take place next month in Bengaluru (subject to Covid-19) and that’s one of the first events where we’ll see Tata branding before they take over a lot of social media and physical space during the IPL 2022 season itself. IPL is looking for long-term partnerships and we won’t be surprised if Tata continues as title sponsor ever after the IPL 2022 edition.
Sources say that BCCI was waiting for Vivo to honour its part of the deal wherein they would have to search for a suitable replacement in the situation that the deal had to be terminated and it was Vivo itself that went on to make the deal happen between Tata and the Indian Premier League!
We’re expecting plenty more such sponsorship deals to take place as the IPL 2022 season comes nearer to its start date. For more updates on the tournament and from cricket from across the world in general, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com…
