Last month, all hell broke loose as the infamous S Sreesanth made a comeback to professional cricket. Having been apprehended for being involved in unlawful activities and corruption in the sport, IPL 2013 was the last time Sreesanth bowled a professional delivery. Suddenly, at the ripe old age of 37 years and after serving out jail time, we was picked in the Kerala squad for the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Many thought it was too late and that he wouldn’t get a single game but he was in fact the star if the night when he made his comeback and he even bowled a lovely swinging delivery to get a wicket in only his second over since his comeback. Post that, he was even added to the 1,000+ player list of those listed to go under the hammer at the IPL 2021 Auction.
However, that was a preliminary list and when the final list of 292 players was announced recently, Sreesanth had failed to make the cut. Many people are now wondering why he hasn’t made the list and how come many lesser names managed to make the list. Today, we’ll break down some of the reasons Sreesanth won’t be under the hammer at the 2021 IPL Auction.
- Firstly, he hasn’t got age on his side. While he does look pump in spirit and body, he’s going to be 38 in a few days from now and we don’t remember very many successful pacers at that age across decades in this game. Especially not in the T20 format.
- Secondly, his numbers weren’t all that good during his comeback series at the 2021 SMA Trophy. Having played 5 games for Kerala in that tournament, he only managed 4 wickets and you usually expect more from your strike bowler. Additionally, he went at an economy rate of nearly 10 runs at over!
- Thirdly and most important, BCCI and IPL may have strongly suggested not including such players in the list who have tainted their reputation by engaging in activities that Sreesanth did. Having been involved with match-fixing, it’s not just this year but we think Sreesanth will be ignored from all future IPL auctions as well!
