We all love the game of cricket and we often refer to it as the ‘gentleman’s game’. However, when certain incidents happen where the integrity of the game is questioned, no one is happy. And one such incident took place in the ongoing CPL 2022 season where an LBW decision sparked plenty of controversy and doubts about the integrity of the tournament.
We’re talking about one particular game – Match 23 of CPL 2022 – Trinbago Knight Riders vs St Lucia Kings. Here, there was a decision appealed to the third umpire and even though there seemed to be enough of television replay proof to know the right decision, the wrong decision was made by the umpires. And of course, fans are not happy with what they witnessed.
Roston Chase LBW – cheating in CPL 2022?
Sunil Narine playing for the Trinbago Knight Riders ran in to bowl the 16th over and Roston Chase was on strike who was obviously struggling to get away in this knock. He was barely going at a run-a-ball at 11(10)* when he faced the first ball of Narine’s over and was dismissed LBW by the umpire. He was upset and immediately signalled for the review.
While we didn’t watch the live footage of this CPL 2022 game, a lot of comments on Twitter suggested that there was an obvious edge on the toe of the bat, before hitting the pads. These comments suggest that there was a spike on the Ultra Edge technology that shows contact with the bat too, in which case an LBW was out of the question altogether.
Another major red flag was that it took ages to bring up the ball tracking, which brought abut more speculations. Quite a few users on twitter asked if it took so long so that the replays could be doctored. Even the commentators on air were surprised when they saw three red dots on ball tracking, indicating impact in line, pitching in line, and also hitting the stumps behind the batsman.
“Roston Chase absolutely robbed there. Why did the third umpire take so long? Was there fixing of the result? There was clearly a deflection of the ball accompanied by a spike. Baffling decision from the third umpire,” said one user on Twitter, who was clearly baffled with this decision by the TV umpire.

Well deserved by the Kings after they were cheated with that shocking Roston Chase decision by the third umpire.

People called the decision ‘baffling’ and ‘shocking’ and other words, and the commentators decided to just be silent when they saw three reds, as we’re sure even they weren’t expecting it. While it cold be just reactions from fans and followers of CPL 2022, it makes us wonder if cheating and fixing is actually prevalent in this sport we love the most.

Let’s all hope that they integrity of the game is being maintained and there isn’t any wrongdoing involved, across the globe. Good on Chase that while he wasn’t able to bat longer thanks to this decision, he came out with the ball and picked three wickets, which helped St Lucia Kings to win a thrilling game against TKR by just 1 run. Here’s the commentary by the Cricbuzz team for the dismissal in question:
