Ross Taylor Retires From International Cricket

On the 2021 New Zealand tour of India, Luteru Ross Poutoa Lote Taylor (better known as just Ross Taylor) had the most horrible time with scores of 11, 2, 1 and 6 in four innings in India. The commentators on air spoke about how this may well be his last overseas tour and they turned out to be right as the 37-year old New Zealand great today announced his retirement from international cricket.

Simon Doull was on air during that Indian tour and he mentioned that Ross Taylor may have one last home season before he quits the game and that’s exactly what happened as Taylor announced he’ll play two more home tests against Bangladesh, and the six ODIs against Australia and Netherlands that will follow. He took to social media to announce his international retirement.

“Today I’m announcing my retirement from international cricket at the conclusion of the home summer, two more tests against Bangladesh, and six odi’s against Australia & the Netherlands. Thank you for 17 years of incredible support. It’s been an honour to represent my country #234.” was the tweet to indicate the Ross Taylor retirement.

The #234 represents his Test cap number and talking about numbers, Taylor has the best of them. With 7,584 runs in 110 Tests, no New Zealand cricketer got more runs than him in the longest format and in the 50-over format too, he had 8,581 runs in 233 ODIs, with a combined total of 40 international centuries. This included a Test best of 290 and an ODI best of 181*.

Such numbers are indicative of a modern great and keeping aside the fact that Taylor only managed a single fifty in his last 10 Test innings, he has been a great servant for New Zealand cricket over the last nearly 2 decades. If he plays both Tests against Bangladesh, his career count will go to 112 Tests which will also tie him with Daniel Vettori for the most Tests by any New Zealand cricketer.

Having played in leagues like the Indian Premier League in the years gone by, Taylor lost his charm in the shortest format a while back and he’s unlikely to be a part of any franchise leagues post retirement. Which means, he’s only likely to be seen in the New Zealand domestic circuit for the next season or maybe even two. See the Ross Taylor retirement tweet here:

“It’s been an amazing journey and I feel incredibly fortunate to have represented my country for as long as I have. It’s been such a privilege to play with and against some of the greats of the game and to have created so many memories and friendships along the way,” said Taylor about his retirement.

“But all good things must come to an end and the timing feels right for me. I want to thank my family, friends and all those who have helped me get to this point. There’ll be plenty of time for more thank-yous and reflections later in the season – but for now I want all my energy and focus to be on preparing and performing for the Black Caps this summer,” he added.
