The media can often make or break you, and we’ve seen that happen for decades. For the last few weeks, there have been rumours of a rift between the former and current Mumbai Indians captains, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya. It’s not the first time there have been instances of media creating rumours of rifts, and it surely won’t be the last time either.
The rumours began after Hardik was called from Gujarat Titans to return to his former franchise Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024. But he wasn’t just called, he was in fact asked to lead the team, replacing 5-time IPL champion Rohit Sharma at the helm. Now that created a huge stir among Rohit fans as well as Mumbai fans.

Neither of the players have addressed the matter publicly as yet. If anything, Hardik and Mark Boucher were seen ducking questions at a press conference, as to why Rohit was replaced as the MI captain from IPL 2024 onwards. That further led people and Indian cricket fans to believing that there is truly an issue between the two.
Today however, the two met an MI training camp ahead of the much-awaited IPL 2024 season, and Hardik swiftly ran towards Rohit to hug him. This would’ve been a warm moment for all fans who saw the video on social media, assuring them that the rumours of the rift were nothing more than just rumours.

Mumbai Indians posted the video on their social media saying 45 and 33 meeting, which is their individual jersey numbers. However, there’s the counter opinion on social media that MI lost a lot of fans, and this could be the social media team’s effort at getting some of them back. Some users on Twitter (X) also said that the two were only acting for the camera. See the video here:

In the video, it can be seen that Hardik spotted Rohit and moved towards him to greet him. Rohit stretched out to shake his peer’s hand but Hardik went over and hugged him instead. The hug was brief and that’s all we were shown in this short video, which has surely gone viral on the internet today.

IPL 2024 begins on 22nd March 2024 and it’s only when the two take the field together that we will know whether there’s a rift between them or not. Their coordination and planning on the field together will be under scrutiny and if you see the MI team in all sorts during the season, you know what’s the reason behind it.
