Usually, Ranji Trophy is the way to the Indian Test team, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is the way to IPL contracts and the Indian T20I team and the Vijay Hazare Trophy is the clear cut road to the Indian ODI side. And that’s exactly the situation that the Himachal Pradesh captain finds himself in after a fantastic outing in the recent VHT 2021 competition.
He’s someone who has been around in the domestic circuit for a few years now and as even played a handful of games for the national side and in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. We’re talking about Rishi Dhawan who on Sunday, 26th Dec 2021, completed the most outstanding season of his career so far, ending as the team’s top run scorer as well as wicket-taker in the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy .
VHT 2021 – Rishi Dhawan’s rise to fame
It’s a great achievement if you finish as either of your team’s top batter or top bowler, and it’s nothing short of flawless and outstanding if you end up doing both. And not just were his performances good for his team but he ended as the league’s second highest run scorer with 458 runs in 8 games and also the league’s second highest wicket-taker with 17 scalps in the tournament.
With the 2021 India tour of South Africa underway, we’re asking the question today of whether or not Rishi Dhawan should make a comeback to the Indian side, for the 3 ODIs that will take place once the Test series is over. He was one of only two batsmen in the tournament to get 5 fifties, narrowly missing his sixth one in the VHT 2021 final where he scored 42*

In the past, he only scored 12 runs and got a single scalp in 3 ODIs for India but he’s making a great case for himself to make a comeback. Why should Rishi Dhawan be picked for the Indian ODI side? (1) India is lacking a genuine all-rounder having tried plenty like Hardik, Vijay Shankar, Dube, and others. (2) India wants players who know how to win and he has that, leading the side to the VHT 2021 trophy!
(3) His performances have come against top opposition, including against Tamil Nadu in the final, which is one of the strongest sides in Indian domestic cricket. (4) He captained Himachal Pradesh and leadership skills always helps the cause for selection. (5) He does well on the big stage – he scored 42* and got 3 wickets in the final and 84 runs to go with 4 wickets in the semi final of 2021 VHT!
Should Rishi Dhawan make India’s ODI side?
It’s probably the best time of his career and the 31-year old has a good chance of making the side. One thing is for sure, and that’s the fact that he’s going to make a comeback in the IPL, now two less than two months away from the IPL 2022 auction. Having represented Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders in the past, he may be picked to his fourth IPL franchise very soon!
