Possibly one of the greatest leg-spinners of all-time, Shane Warne shocked the world yesterday as he left for heavenly abode and passed away, only 52 years old. He changed Australian and world cricket over the years and decades and no one wants to see him gone, some still in shock just a day after the news first came out.
Tonnes of tributes and messages started pouring in on social media and Twitter in particular after the heartbreaking news of Warne’s passing away. Fans wrote messages while commentators, former cricketers and teammates also chipped in, all remembering Shane Warne in their own special way. And one of them who wrote a tribute to Warnie was former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting.

Almost all of Shane Warne’s teammates over the years expressed their grief on social media after the shocking news of Warne’s death. And one of the latest to do so is Ricky Ponting, more than 12 hours after the news came in. The former Aussie captain spent over a decade with Warne playing for the national side, and many more years after retirement in other roles in Australian and world cricket as well.
More recently, the two were spotted together in broadcasting duties in home games and the Ashes 2021/22 series as well. “Hard to put this into words. I first met him when I was 15 at the Academy. He gave me my nickname. We were teammates for more than a decade, riding all the highs and lows together. Through it all he was someone you could always count on, someone who loved his family…” said Ponting.

They met when they were teenagers and knew each other for decades, so there had to be a very special bond between Ponting and Warne, having been a part of several iconic victories for the national side over time. Famously know to the world as ‘Punter’, Ricky even went on to say that it was Warnie who gave him this nickname.
“Someone who would be there for you when you needed him and always put his mates first. The greatest bowler I ever played with or against. RIP King. My thoughts are with Keith, Bridgette, Jason, Brooke, Jackson and Summer,” he added to his original tweet, passing on his condolences to Warne’s family.
