Every major company’s main goal over time is expansion. And that’s exactly what we’re hearing is happening with Reliance Industries as they make a bid to expand their sports portfolio, this time overseas. As per reports which have been confirmed by the owners as well, the company is all set to acquire a team in the Emirates Cricket Board’s (ECB) upcoming UAE T20 League.
This is a first of its kind expansion for Reliance’s cricket business as it’s their first move overseas. They already own IPL side Mumbai Indians which happens to be the most successful side in the Indian T20 league, getting 5 titles till date. Surely, we can expect the new franchise in the UAE T20 League to be a winning and successful team as well.

“The move is the first major overseas expansion of Reliance Industries’ cricket operations in the global franchise-based leagues,” said an official press release about this move. This will become their second franchise team in the cricket business which also includes broadcasting rights, sponsorships, talent management, consultancy and more.
Reliance will have rights to own and operate the new franchise team, and this is being done through the company’s subsidiary, Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Ltd (RSBVL). Mumbai Indians co-owner Nita Ambani commented on the same, saying, “I look forward to strengthening and further expanding our global fanbase, and having a longer engagement with them through this new League.”
“We aim to transform cricket in the UAE through the UAE T20 League. RIL has the legacy with a proven track record in establishing the most successful team in franchise cricket. Association of vanguard like RIL with the League demonstrates the confidence in our system and the strength of our infrastructure to deliver world class events,” said Chairman of the UAE T20 League, Khalid Al Zarooni.
