Rayalaseema Kings Wins APL Season 2!

While there were bigger tournaments taking place at the same time, quite a few thousands of cricket fans were tuned in to the Andhra Premier League (APL T20) which played out its final today. APL Season 2 saw Coastal Riders vs Rayalaseema Kings facing off in the final and while there was some rain around, we managed to get in a complete game, cut down to 18 overs.

Riders batted first and scored 155/8 in their 18 overs, with Madilla Vardhan top scoring for the team with 50(32). Riders won APL 2022 and they came into this final as the favourite, the defending champions. However, they weren’t able to defend this title as Rayalaseema Kings chased down the target and went on to become APL Season 2 winners!

While the Kings were struggling in the final few overs with a few quick wickets falling, the experienced Hanuma Vihari stood tall at one end. Vinay Kumar scored a quickfire fifty but it was Vihari who was there to close out the game, finishing with 46(29)*. Kumar picked a wicket and scored a super quick 53(23), which got him the Man of the Match award as well.

Towards the end, the Kings needed 13 runs in the final 12 balls but they didn’t want to take this game down to the final over. Girinath Reddy was on strike at the start of that penultimate over and he smashed 4, 6, 6 to complete a stunning victory for Rayalaseema Kings, finishing the game with ease, and as many as 5 wickets and 9 balls to spare. They scored 22 runs off the final 4 balls!

There’s a whole lot of young talent in the Kings side, and that was on display today for sure. Added to that is Vihari’s experience as captain, having played a lot of cricket for Team India and in the IPL as well.
