See Rassie van der Dussen’s Wrong Run Out Decision

The team at Read Scoops was watching the 1st ODI between South Africa and Bangladesh on 18 March 2022, taking place at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. Bangladesh batted first and scored 314/7 which meant it was going to be a very difficult chase indeed for the home team. But right enough, they had their most dependable and consistent player in Rassie van der Dussen who decided to step up.

Still very young in his ODI career, he began this game with a batting average of 70+ in this format and he went on to further his case as one of the top ODI batters in the world, scoring yet another fifty today. However, there was a huge matter of controversy in the 35th over when van der Dussen was in danger at the bowler’s end with a direct hit, but the third umpire was quick to give him not out.

Now when you have a quick look at the replay, it looks like Dussen is clearly in the crease and play can go on. That’s exactly what the third umpire did in this game as he moved on but the on-air commentators looked at the replays again and it showed that the bat was past the crease but it wasn’t ever grounded before the stumps were hit.

We looked at the replays on multiple occasions and each time, we were convinced that that was clearly OUT. In fact, his foot may have got ground within the crease before his bat got down, and it was actually the shadow of the bat which made it look like he was in the crease at the time of the bails being dislodged.

Considering he was the anchor role in this chase in the 1st ODI, it could’ve been a very crucial decision, and one that could have garnered a lot of attention. However, van der Dussen was dismissed only some time later for 86(98), on the first ball of the 38th over. Taskin Ahmed came in to bowl his final over and it was a brilliant diving catch on the boundary by Yasir Ali as RVDD didn’t add much after his reprieve.

At the time of writing this, the hosts were still in trouble as they needed upwards of 10 runs per over in the final 10 overs, with not too many wickets still in hand. van der Dussen was the fifth batsman to be dismissed and left his side in a situation of bother. Anyway, we’d like to hear your thoughts on the situation and if you think it was out or not:
