We’ve often spoken about how good a player Yashasvi Jaiswal is, and what a bright future he has in Indian cricket. He may not have had the best of tournaments at IPL 2022 but he was quick to get back among the runs as the knockouts stage of Ranji Trophy 2022 came about, representing Mumbai in this domestic tournament.
He didn’t play the group stages for them and just joined the side for the quarter final, semi final and final of this edition of the Ranji Trophy. Just last week we spoke about how he scored three consecutive tons upon return to the first class format, including one in the 2nd innings of the quarter final followed by twin centuries in the semi final. Then, he continued that form in the final too!
Yashasvi Jaiswal – 4 successive Ranji Trophy fifties
Today on Day 1 of the 5-day final, Mumbai won the toss and elected to bat first at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Prithvi Shaw and Jaiswal started well and set up the perfect foundation for Mumbai with an 87-run opening stand. Shaw narrowly missed out on a fifty but Jaiswal managed to stay put and convert for another 50+ score.
In the second session, a couple of more wickets fell but through all of that, Jaiswal looked really comfortable at the crease. At a point in the second session, he even decided to accelerate the rate of scoring and there was a flurry of boundaries. However, that aggression also turned out to be his downfall later that session.

He was batting well and was set when he fell for a wide short ball, which he decided to drive, but it only led to an outside edge which went straight to gully where Yash Dubey was waiting for an easy catch. Anubhav Agarwal was the bowler who managed to dismiss Jaiswal and prevent him from scoring what would’ve been a fourth consecutive Ranji Trophy century.
Mumbai lost regular wickets despite the run flow and they ended the first day of the Ranji Trophy 2022 final with a score of 248/5 on the board. Sarfaraz Khan is batting on 40* and given the form he’s in right now, he can pile on the runs early on Day 2 as he’s the top scorer of the tournament this year.
With the ball, Agarwal and Saransh Jain picked up 2 wickets each but the most impressive of the lot was Gaurav Yadav who troubled all the batsmen but ended wicketless on the day. It’s Madhya Pradesh’s second Ranji Trophy final while it’s the 47th appearance for Mumbai, with the latter looking to win their 42nd first class title here.
It was nice to see Yashasvi Jaiswal doubling up on his centuries in the Ranji Trophy semi final. It’s important for young players to still value first class development to aid their white ball game in my view.
