It’s not every day that you can claim a hat-trick or a similar achievement on your international debut in cricket. Someone who achieved this feat a couple of weeks back was Nathan Ellis who made his T20I debut against Bangladesh in Dhaka and while he was wicketless prior to the start of the final over of the innings, he ended his spell with a hat-trick, which you can read about here.

A lot of interest was coming from the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well, because the UAE segment of the tournament is yet to be completed, set to resume now on 19th September 2021. A total of 3 franchises showed interest in him and eventually, it was Punjab Kings who went on to get his signature.

With a number of Australians dropping out of the rest of IPL 2021 after a press conference from Cricket Australia, teams were looking for replacements. Australians are usually the expensive players at IPL auctions and this time, the team paid big bucks for pacers like Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith, both of whom will not feature for the remainder of the IPL 2021 tournament.
In another franchise, Pat Cummins (KKR) will also be left out of the rest of the tournament. Since Punjab lost two crucial bowlers, they had to get a replacement and Ellis seemed to fit the bill. He has raw pace and is brimming with confidence after his international call-up. He’s even one of three reserve players shortlisted to be a part of the Australia squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
With a combined total of 8 games among Richardson and Meredith in their respective first season in the IPL, they managed only a cumulative 7 wickets and Punjab will be expecting better results from Ellis.
