After India completed a 3-0 whitewash against the hosts in the ODI series, it was now time for the T20 series of 5 games, where both teams brought different squads, with players specialising in this shorter format of the game. Today was the 1st T20 between West Indies and India at the Brian Lara International Stadium and it was quite an entertaining game indeed.
And while there were wickets, fours, sixes, and everything that makes a T20 game good, there was one instance where a bit of a random instance happened. We’re talking about a moment in the 18th over of the game where a Windies bowler had an easy chance out India’s Ravichandran Ashwin, but the former just decided against it for some reason we don’t know…
Obed McCoy doesn’t run out Ashwin
It was the third ball of the 18th over and R Ashwin was busy running back to the striker’s end, trying to complete the second run in order to keep Dinesh Karthik on strike. He was a couple of meters out of the crease when the throw came in from the deep and he should’ve been run out by miles. Obed McCoy was the bowler and he even picked up the ball cleanly.
If there was a more dangerous batsman waiting in the hut, I’d understand if McCoy had a strategy to not run out Ashwin. However, he was the last of the recognised batsmen as such in the Indian batting lineup today, coming out to bat at number #8. But at the same time, we can’t think of any other reason why McCoy would just let this opportunity pass by.

Even the on-air commentators were wondering what could the possible reasons be of not wanting to effect the run out. Eventually, the only thing we could think of is that it was a complete brain fade moment for the left-arm pacer. Because there doesn’t seem to be any other logical explanation as to why this could’ve happened, even though it all happened within the matter of a few seconds.
Eventually, Ashwin remained not out as Karthik was dominating the bowlers from one end. He did well to continue giving DK the strike and the latter finished the innings with 41(19)*, allowing India to get some very important runs in the death overs. That effort from DK towards the end allowed India to get to 190/6.
Later on, West Indies started well in the first over and the first couple of balls of the second over as well, in the chase. However, once they lost a wicket, there were plenty more to follow. West Indies only managed 122/8 in their 20 overs, and India finished with a 68-run victory to go 1-0 up in the 5-game T20 series.
