Nicholas Pooran Named West Indies White Ball Captain!

All cricket fans across the world were shell shocked when Kieron Pollard announced his retirement from international cricket a week ago, even though he was only recently handed over the captaincy reins in the white ball formats. Also, he’s only 34 years old and you’d expect that he has at least a couple of more years left in him.

However, West Indies cricket has always seen a lot of controversial retirement decisions and issues between players and the board, so we can speculate that there was something going wrong. Either way, life goes on and today, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) went on to name Nicholas Pooran as the new white-ball captain.

Pooran’s appointment was definitely on the cards as he was the vice-captain of the white-ball team during Pollard’s tenure as captain. However, it was confirmed today that he will take over after Pollard’s sudden retirement. The southpaw and wicket-keeper has also led the team in a few matches in Pollard’s absence, and has also led his side in a few franchise leagues.

“Cricket West Indies (CWI) today confirmed the appointment of Nicholas Pooran as the West Indies Men’s One Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I) captain, following the international retirement of Kieron Pollard,” said an official statement from the CWI about the appointment of Pooran as captain, who is currently representing Sunrisers Hyderabad at the IPL 2022 season in India.

“Pooran will take over the captaincy for the West Indies ODI and T20I teams after being Pollard’s deputy over the last year. The appointment will include the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in October 2023. Shai Hope has been recommended to stand as vice-captain of the ODI team,” continued the statement.

The 26-year old wicket-keeper batsman made his debut for West Indies in 2016 and while he didn’t rise to fame immediately, he has grown to become a useful member in this side. In fact, he is one of the most feared white-ball batsmen in the world, with a lot of demand for him in franchise leagues across the world.

He has been appointed as captain at a crucial time for West Indies with the 2022 T20 World Cup only a few months away now. In fact, fans would be slightly disappointed that pollard decided to step away just before such an important tournament. At the same time, the 2021 T20 World Cup was a disappointing one for Windies and that could’ve been a reason for him to step down as well.

There’s plenty of responsibility on Pooran’s shoulders now as he will look to build a strong white ball team over the next few months and possibly years. For more updates on his journey as captain and other cricket news from across the world, make sure you stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
