Here’s one of the most awaited moments in the build up to the Indian Premier League 2022 edition. In October last year, the first ever expansion in IPL history took place, with two new IPL teams entering the fray. And of course, they couldn’t go into the IPL 2022 Auction without their franchises getting a name each, so here’s one of the teams with their official team name.
We’re talking about the Lucknow franchise which is all set to create a completely fresh squad in the IPL 2022 Auction. They only recently joined social media and they immediately posted a new campaign, asking fans to select the name of their squad. They posted this on the evening of 4th Jan 2022 and they were quick to select a winner from the suggestions. Fans started trending Lucknow Nawabs!
New IPL Team – Lucknow Nawabs?!
The RP Sanjiv Goenka Group owned team already had an IPL team in the past in the Rising Pune Supergiant. Their old Instagram account was activated a few days ago but since Instagram doesn’t allow usernames to be changed, they were still under the name @punesupergiants. However, the social media team must’ve soon realised it was a wrong call, so they launched a new account called @officiallucknowiplteam.
They were quick to post and create engagement on both Instagram and Twitter and started a unique campaign where they asked users themselves to select a name for their team, with the caption, “IPL mein kuch naya ho raha hai. Stay tuned for more!” Prior to that, they posted a welcome photo on both channels, with caption, “Swaagat nahi karoge hamara?”

They even posted photos of their management which includes mentor Gautam Gambhir and if you remember well, they hired former England coach Andy Flower as their Head Coach as well. Before that, they even posted about getting their ‘blue tick’ and other IPL franchises also posted to welcome them. The post asking users for a team name got us excited about the new IPL team; thousands comments came in.
Some of the funny suggestions we noticed were Lucknow Lipstick Spoilers, Lucknow United (which was flowing around earlier too with Manchester United owners showing interest in a team during the bidding), Lucknow Lords, Rising Lucknow Supergiant, Lucknow Lajaawab, Lucknow Lightning, and much more.

With the social media accounts full of posts in Hindi, we know it’s going to be an Indian name to the franchise and we’ll confirm it here as soon as they tweet about it!
