- Name: Mumbai Indians
- Captain: Rohit Sharma
- Head Coach: Mahela Jayawardene
- Squad members: 25 players (4 retained)
- Best result: Champions in IPL 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020
- IPL 2021 result: 5th on points table
So we’re beginning with this particular team because no one has been more successful than them in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years. Mumbai Indians have five IPL titles and they usually win a new title every second year, a trend they followed in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, before breaking it and winning consecutive titles in 2019 and 2020. Last year however, was a rare under-performance where they failed to even qualify for the IPL 2021 playoffs.

They’ve always had one of the strongest teams on paper but IPL 2022 is different because this year, we have the mega auction. Each team was allowed to retain up to a maximum of 4 players and Mumbai Indians exercised that full quota, retaining captain Rohit Sharma, batsman Suryakumar Yadav, one of India’s best bowlers in Jasprit Bumrah, and their long-time faithful in West Indies all-rounder, Kieron Pollard.
Since IPL 2021, Surya has played a lot of international cricket and we can only imagine how much that may have boosted his confidence, while Rohit Sharma is now also a much more confident man as he took over captaincy for India across all three formats. Hardik Pandya picked up by Gujarat Titans and Krunal released too means they were on the look out for an all-rounder or two, which they weren’t able to get.

The closest to an all-rounder they’ve got are West Indies’ Fabian Allen and Australia’s Daniel Sams. Now while we are big fans of both these cricketers, especially in the T20 format, we’re not sure how they fit in to the side. Both have a poor IPL record so far – Allen having only 1 wicket and 6 runs in 4 past PL games, and Sams having the same record in 5 IPL games. Are they then really big names that Mumbai can rely on?!
Mumbai went on to spend heavily on Ishan Kishan and bought him back to the MI Paltan, but we’re not sure if that was the right decision. They paid 15+ Crore for him and he ended up becoming the most expensive player of the IPL 2022 Auction, but he’s not super consistent and it means they are short of squad depth now. They’re going to find themselves struggling if their 5-6 big names don’t fire this season.
On the batting front, they added Tim David to their side who is a great addition to the squad but with an 8+ Crore price tag, they once again spent heavily on one player. Their four overseas players are likely to be Pollard, David, Tymal Mills, and Sams. Allen is likely to miss out while Jofra Archer will be a good addition to the side in IPL 2023, as he’s out of IPL 2022 with injury. Baby AB Dewald Brevis is also unlikely to get much game time!

They’ll find themselves most short in the bowling department. Among the Indian bowlers, Bumrah will find himself alone as this team has the most number of lesser known, uncapped players. With bowlers like Murugan Ashwin, Basil Thampi, Jaydev Unadkat, Mayank Markande, and other forming the Indian bowling unit, we’re not too sure they’re worth being a pre-tournament favourite with Betway at odds of 6.0.

We’re super happy about the Riley Meredith purchase but it’s unlikely that they go in with three overseas pacers. Tymal Mills is known as a T20 specialist and he’s sure to get a place over Meredith. We can expect some fiery starts by Mumbai Indians in the powerplay overs and a very weak middle order means we won’t see too many high scores from them. On the flipside, they’re sure to conceded some 200+ totals in IPL 2022. And no, we don’t see Mumbai winning the title this season.
Mumbai Indians IPL 2022 squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, Ishan Kishan, Dewald Brevis, Murugan Ashwin, Basil Thampi, Jaydev Unadkat, Mayank Markande, Tymal Mills, Jofra Archer, Fabian Allen, Daniel Sams, Anmolpreet Singh, Tim David, Riley Meredith, Arjun Tendulkar, Sanjay Yadav, Ramandeep Singh, Aryan Juyal, Tilak Varma, Hrithik Shokeen, Rahul Buddhi, Arshad Khan.
