Mendis, Gunathilaka, Dickwella Sent Home to Sri Lanka

It’s really unfortunate if you are a Sri Lankan cricket fan and you’re reading this article. It has been years since the national team had any sort of success at the highest level and while they are in the doldrums, the national cricketers aren’t even lifting their heads high in pride. Recently, three senior members of the team were caught breaching the bio-bubble in England and strict action is being taken against them.

Mendis, Gunathilaka, Dickwella Sent Home to Sri Lanka

The cricketers in the news are vice-captain Kusal Mendis, wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella and opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka. They were found strolling the streets of England after breaching the bio-secure bubble, and were secretly smoking cigarettes as well. A passerby took a video which has gone viral on social media and it prompted an immediate investigation too.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was quick to respond to this and all three cricketers were immediately suspended from the tour and flown home with immediate effect. What’s worse is that this comes at a time when the national side has been having major troubles to get a single win, recently being thrashed 0-3 in the T20 series and the ODI series yet to be played in England.

What this means is that the team becomes even weaker going into the ODI series, and definitely low on morale now as well. Boards pay thousands of dollars to give cricketers preferential treatment during these tours and amidst this pandemic and this kind of behaviour is just arrogant and outrageous.

The 26-year old Mendis has often been considered as one of the brightest upcoming talents in Sri Lankan cricket but he seems to be unable to keep out of trouble. It was less than a year ago that he was arrested back home for a car accident that involved killing a 74-year old man, and now this. Take a look at the viral video involving these cricketers:

“The players have been suspended pending a full inquiry, but have confessed to having gone out. They are being recalled from the tour with immediate effect,” said SLC vice-president, Mohan de Silva. For other similar sports and cricket stories from around the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
