Mattie McKiernan – Most Expensive T20 Figures Ever!

Most cricketers strive to get into the record books for something or the other, which will help them stay remembered in the game for many years and decades to come. And while some of these records are due to great talents and professionalism in the sport, we tend to see unwanted records as well, like we saw in a quarter final game of the 2022 T20 Blast.

The game was Somerset vs Derbyshire and it was the fourth quarter final of tournament where Somerset batted first and smashed a record total of 265/5 which was sure to take them ahead to the semi final. And while there was this great team total put up on the board, one particular bowler was smashed for the most runs conceded in a T20 bowling spell ever.

Mattie McKiernan - Most Expensive T20 Figures Ever!

Mattie McKiernan bowls most expensive T20 over

Leg-spinner Mattie McKiernan had a great season prior to this quarter final, including getting a wicket in a warmup game against India as well. In fact, he picked up a 3-fer in the last Blast 2022 game before the knockouts began. Here however, he taken to the cleaners and created an unwanted record of the most expensive T20 spell in the history of the game.

He bowled out his four overs and took a beating in all four of them, ending with 0/82 in 4 overs. I particular, South African left-handed batsman Rilee Rossouw took to him, smashing as many as 36 runs in the final over of McKiernan’s spell, taking his economy rate to 20.50! Giving so many runs in a spell is usually unseen even in an ODI game, let alone when you have only 4 overs to bowl.

In the 15th over of the innings, Rossouw smashed two sixes of two balls against McKiernan, hitting the third four a boundary and registering 16 runs off just 3 balls in the over. Then, he received 2 runs from a no ball and hit the next three balls for three more consecutive sixes, registering 36 runs off that single over.

McKiernan was attacked in the third over of his spell as well, where he conceded two sixes (one each to Rossouw and Tom Banton) and as many as 21 runs in the over. This power-hitting allowed Somerset to put up the highest score in T20 Blast history, and McKiernan going wicketless would’ve been what made this outing even worse.

When Derbyshire came out to bat, it looked like the game was being played on a whole different pitch altogether, as they were bundled out for 74 runs and yet another record was created as Somerset registered a whopping 191-run victory. Undoubtedly, Rossouw was named man of the match for his fine knock of 93(36) which helped book his team’s berth in the T20 Blast 2022 semi final.

As for McKiernan, he had an outing which he’ll be wanting to forget and put it behind him soon. For similar cricket and sports news from around the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
