Just coming in, latest news reports have confirmed that the future of the IPL 2021 season is in doubt. After 2 players from the KKR camp tested positive, three more from Chennai Super Kings tested positive yesterday including bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji. This has led to the 5th May 2021 fixture of CSK vs RR being postponed/cancelled while the rest of the season is on hold as well.
K Viswanathan, Chennai Super Kings CEO, confirmed that the entire squad went into a week-long isolation from Monday, 3rd May 2021 which means tomorrow’s fixture has been cancelled for now. The organising committee has confirmed that today’s game between Mumbai and Hyderabad will take place as scheduled but the rest of the competition is in doubt. IPL 2021 initially received a proposal from UAE Cricket to host the entire series there as they did in 2020 but they decided to continue the series at home. However, there seems to have been multiple cases despite being in bio-secure bubbles and limited venues, which has led to this decision being made.

“The IPL SOPs say if any member of the team is infected the rest of the group needs to isolate for seven days. So we have informed the IPL on Monday,” Viswanathan said. While the IPL has not made any official announcement yet, it is confirmed that tomorrow’s match will be the second of the season to be postponed, while there are reports of them wanting to shift the rest of the entire season to Mumbai.
Apart from squad members being infected, some members of the ground staff at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi had tested positive as well, leading to this decision. All teams will go into quarantine and we have reason to believe that there will be at least a one week gap before any action resumes in the IPL 2021 season.
Most recently, Wriddhiman Saha from the SRH camp has also tested positive for Covid-19, casting doubt over tonight’s game as well. Few minutes later, we also heard of Delhi Capitals leg-spinner Amit Mishra testing positive. UPDATE: With the number of rising cases within the bubble, IPL 2021 has been indefinitely suspended.
