Did Maheesh Theekshana Bowl 152 Kmph?

We’ve seen some pretty weird things in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years ad this includes teams defending low totals, scoring 31 runs to win in the last over, a few ridiculous fights, and much more. However, not many times would you have witnessed a spinner bowling at speeds quicker than the fastest pacers in the world.

That’s what happened in today’s IPL 2023 match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The latter won the toss and put Mumbai in to bat and from there, it was a lot of early wickets for the away team. And later in the 14th over, we saw a weird phenomenon of a Sri Lankan mystery spinner bowling one of the fastest balls of the tournament.

Did Maheesh Theekshana Bowl 152 Kmph?

IPL 2023 – Maheesh Theekshana bowling at 152 kmph

Spinners usually bowl between 80-100 kmph and one of the fastest spinners in the CSK team right now is Ravindra Jadeja who often bowls a ball of 100+ kmph every now and then. But today, Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana apparently bowled at 152 kmph which is unheard of when it comes to spin bowling across the world.

But answering the question above, ‘Did Maheesh Theekshana really bowl at 152 kmph?’ Obviously he didn’t bowl at that pace and there was a mistake on the part of the broadcasters, as a bowler with a 2-step run-up of a spinner would ever be able to deliver the ball at the pace shown in the graphic above. This happened on ball 13.4 of the Mumbai Indians innings.

The moment in question was the 14th over and was the third over of Theekshana’s spell as well. He didn’t have a very successful day and while he was quiet in his first three overs, he got taken to the cleaners in his last over for 15 runs, ending with 0/28 in his four overs. He was backed up well by his countryman Matheesha Pathirana so far in the IPL 2023 season. See some tweets on the mistake below:

See the video above. It was just a normal delivery by the bowler which was swept away for four by Mumbai Indians batter, Nehal Wadhera. The left-handed batsman played an important knock in the context of the game before being dismissed for 64(51) in the 18th over, against the bowling of Pathirana.
