It’s been a quick season with a number of bowlers eyeing up to be the fastest bowlers of the tournament in IPL 2022. And among them, the fastest were Lockie Ferguson from New Zealand and India’s very own Umran Malik. And while Malik gained the most eyeballs and fanfare throughout the tournament, it was Lockie who ended up bowling the quickest ball of the tournament.
Coming into the final game of IPL 2022, we were sure that Malik’s 157 kmph thunderbolt would not be broken but we were wrong. As he ran up to bowl the final ball of the 5th over of the Royals’ innings, Ferguson delivered his quickest of the tournament, sending through a searing yorker at 157.3 kmph which became the fastest ball in IPL 2022!
Lockie Ferguson bowls 157.3 kmph!
The ball was too quick even for Jos Buttler who happens to be the best batsmen in the tournament, scoring 800+ runs in the season to win the Orange Cap as well. The yorker was just outside off and Buttler was too slow to get his bat down, as he hurried away through him and to the keeper. In today’s game, he had all the top five quickest deliveries of the game.
Not only did Ferguson win the cheque for the fastest delivery of the IPL 2022 final but he also went on to get the award for the fastest delivery of the tournament. However, he missed the fastest delivery of IPL history but just a little bit. Many years ago, it was Shaun Tait who delivered 157.7 which remains intact as the fastest delivery in IPL history.

However, that record seems to be in a whole lot of doubt going forward because Ferguson and Malik have been fighting it out all season and got quicker and quicker with every game. And there’s a massive chance that Malik regains this record in IPL 2023 because he’s young and has been growing with every game.
Others who crossed the 150-kmph mark during IPL 2022 were Anrich Nortje, Alzarri Joseph, and Mohsin Khan. It’s the first time that we’ve had so many bowlers gunning for the quickest delivery of the tournament, and that speaks volumes about the future of this tournament. And it’s great to see a young Indian in this list as well.
