Kamindu Mendis Breaks 39-Year Old Test Cricket Record

Sri Lankan opener Kamindu Mendis etched his name into the record books on Friday, 27th September 2024, becoming the fastest Sri Lankan cricketer to reach 1,000 Test runs. The 25-year-old achieved the feat in just his 13th Test innings, eclipsing the previous record of 12 innings held by two greats of the game of cricket.

Only Herbert Sutcliffe (England) and Everton Weekes (West Indies) reached 1,000 Test runs faster than Kamindu Mendis, accomplishing the feat in 12 innings each. Sutcliffe stands first on the list because in terms of time needed to get there, he was higher, getting there within only 244 days after making his Test debut for England, all the way back in 1925.

As for Sri Lankan batsmen, the fastest to get to this milestone of 1,000 Test runs was by Roy Dias, Michael Vandort, and his current teammate, Dhananjaya de Silva. Each of them got there in 23 Test innings each, with Dias reaching the milestone in the quickest time, needing 3 years and 209 days since his debut to get there.

As for Mendis, he broke multiple records today. Firstly, he became the first ever in the history of Test cricket to score fifty and more in each of his first 8 career Test matches. He then went on to go past that as he brought up his 5th Test century on Day 2 of the same Test match, also going past Joe Root (4) for the most Test centuries in 2024.

Roy Dias reached 1,000 Test runs in his 23rd Test innings, a Sri Lankan batting record set in 1985. This 39-year old record has finally been broken, as Mendis brought up his second 150+ score, getting a new career best score, and also recording 1,000 test runs of his own. Mendis’s journey to 1,000 Test runs has been nothing short of spectacular.

He has consistently displayed a blend of aggression and technique, scoring runs at a rapid pace without compromising his solidity. His ability to adapt to different conditions and play various shots has been a hallmark of his batting, and we think we’re going to be entertained by the southpaw in months and years to come.

By scoring 1,000 Test runs in 13 innings, Kamindu Mendis becomes the join second-fastest to do so in Test history, equalling the record of none other than cricket’s best, Sir Donald Bradman. When he came out to bat in this innings, he needed 178 runs to get to the record and he got there in style, accelerating after going past the 150-mark as a declaration was bound to happen soon.

Coming to the match, Sri Lanka batted first in Galle after winning the 1st Test, and they put up a massive 1st innings total thanks to centuries from Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, and Kusal Mendis, with Angelo Mathews also narrowly missing out on another Test century. Sri Lanka were 602/5 when they declared, as Mendis ended on 182(250)*!
