Jos Buttler Records Maiden IPL Century

Six games into the IPL 2021 season and Jos Buttler was yet to prove his mettle to Rajasthan Royals, a franchise he has been a part of since the last few seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL) now. However, things were set to change for him on 2nd May 2021 as he and his team took on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 28 of the IPL 2021 season.

Prior to this game, which was the first of two games on this Super Sunday double header, Buttler had got a couple of forties but wasn’t at his most threatening best. Sunrisers won the toss and elected to field first under their new captain Kane Williamson and opening the batting, Buttler went on to get his first fifty of IPL 2021, his highest career IPL score and then also his maiden IPL century – all in one game!

We have a list of the all-time IPL centuries and Buttler went on to etch his name into this list as well today. Regardless of spin or pace, Buttler smashed every bowler and recorded his maiden IPL century as well as his highest scorer in this cash-rich league. In the process, he also put his team in a fabulous position to win this game against SRH, propelling them to 200+ on a hot afternoon at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Prior to this, Buttler had an IPL best of 95* and it’s quite surprising he never had a century before this. In fact, he narrowly missed a unique record in IPL 2018 where he scored 5 consecutive IPL fifties, missing the sixth one by a few runs. Today however, he surpassed all records and ended with 11 fours and 8 massive sixes, hitting them out of the ground for fun towards the end of the innings.

He ended with 124(64) and this is a knock that won’t be forgotten anytime soon by cricket fans, scoring at a scorching strike rate of 193.75! Quite a few bowlers bore the brunt of his big-hitting on this day including Mohammad Nabi who was smashed for 21 off his only over while Sandeep Sharma took a beating as well, going for 50 runs in his 4 overs, including a whopping 24 runs in the final over of his spell!

However, it was Sharma who had the last laugh, picking the wicket of Buttler on the last ball of his final over. He saved a few runs which would’ve been scored in the final over and Rajasthan ended with 220/3 in their 20 overs, setting a daunting target for Hyderabad. When the chase began, there seemed to be some initial hope for SRH but they lost too many wickets in the middle overs, giving RR the victory!

Manish Pandey opened with Jonny Bairstow and they scored 31 and 30 respectively, which ended up being the highest scores in the team, as SRH only managed 165/8 in their 20 overs. Rajasthan Royals won by 55 runs which gave them a much needed victory, which would boost their confidence given they didn’t have a great record in IPL 2021 before this victory.

With the ball, both of Mustafizur Rahman and Chris Morris picked up 3 wickets each but it’s no surprise that Jos Buttler was awarded the Man of the Match award for his scintillating century knock. He said, “I finally will have Alastair Cook stop telling me that he has got one T20 hundred more than me.” For more updates on Jos Buttler and the rest of the IPL 2021 season, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
