Every year, we have something called Finals Day at the Vitality T20 Blast where both semi finals as well as the final are played on the same day. It tends to be one of the most exciting days on the annual cricketing calendar in England, as well as for those watching from across the world. Today, we saw the most astonishing start to Finals Day 2022.
It was the first semi final of the day with Yorkshire vs Lancashire taking place at Edgbaston in Birmingham. It was very much a topsy-turvy kind of first innings as Yorkshire began with 66/1 in the first six overs but after the powerplay, the power hitting and run rate was reduced, along with a few wickets falling. However, a lovely cameo from Jordan Thompson brought the game back for Yorkshire in the backend.
Finals Day 2022 – Jordan Thompson fifty
When Tom Kohler-Cadmore was dismissed for 66(44), many may have thought that a 170+ score would be a bit too tough for Yorkshire. However, Jordan Thompson had other plans as he started smashing sixes for fun in the final few overs. In the 18th over especially, he had a brilliant over as he smashed Danny Lamb for three sixes in four balls.
Richard Gleeson came on to bowl the 19th over and he got a very similar treatment from Thompson. The first two balls of the over were smashed for six here too, as Thompson got to a 17-ball fifty. A very entertaining one indeed, and we think this was the best way for us to kick start Finals Day 2022.

He didn’t last too long after getting to his fifty though, as Gleeson had the last laugh and dismissed him on the final ball of the 19th over. However, Thompson had done his job by then as he walked back for 50(18), having firmly for his side into the driver’s seat by the time he was out. Eventually, Yorkshire put up 204/7 and they would be super pleased with this batting effort after winning the toss.
They lost Adam Lyth early in the innings but Dawid Malan and Kohler-Cadmore steadied the ship before Thompson and Shadab Khan brought out the fireworks in the final few overs. Luke Wells and Lamb picked up a couple of wickets each, but all of the Lancashire bowlers turned out to be expensive on the day. See some reactions on Twitter here:

It’s a good batting pitch and at the time of writing this, the Lancashire batsmen just walked out to bat. They’ll surely miss Liam Livingstone today who is their biggest hitter but he’s out with the national squad where England is taking on India in the 3-match ODI series.
