Everyone’s been super excited for the inaugural edition of the new CSA T20 League because they’ve allowed foreign investors and many of the teams have same owners as the world famous Indian Premier League (IPL). One of the IPL teams Mumbai Indians have MI Cape Town and now, the Chennai Super Kings owners also revealed the name and logo of their SA League franchise.

The tournament has been named as the SA20 League and the inaugural edition will take place in Jan-Feb 2023. The hype is building and the Johannesburg franchise has finally revealed their team name and logo, after doing a countdown on their social media pages. The team will be known as the Joburg Super Kings and their official logo wasn’t too far off from the CSK one either.

Joburg Super Kings name and logo revealed

Coming from the CSK franchise itself was former opener Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, and Maheesh Theekshana, while the like of Gerald Coetzee, Romario Shepherd, and others were also announced in the initial squad for the Joburg Super Kings. While CSK has #WhistlePodu as their official hashtag, the Joburg franchise has #WhistlesForJoburg.

There’s a lot of similarities between the two franchises and that’s what will help the SA team gain a whole lot of popularity that the multiple IPL title winning team CSK has gained over more than 15 years. The reveal video went live on the new team’s social media today at 12pm, with a video detailing the history of ‘Super Kings’ and their journey so far.

Mark Nicholas, Jono Leaf-Wright, Graeme Smith, KS Viswanathan, and two other special guests joined a panel this afternoon for this special announcement where the team’s name and logo was revealed. In the weeks and months to come, we’ll get more details on Joburg Super Kings including their jersey, possible playing eleven, captain, coaches, and much more. See the launch video here:

There were thousands of initial reactions that came from netizens, and most of them were not surprised with the team name, considering the CSK influence and same owners. We’re hoping that the IPL influence will allow this new SA20 League to grow as all past efforts by Cricket South Africa (CSA) haven’t led to any profitable T20 leagues for them over the years.

Stephen Fleming and Albie Morkel are part of the JSK coaching staff as well, and it’s going to be one tough team to contend with when this tournament kicks off next year. However, the other SA20 franchises have also got big names joining the squad and the coaching team, so we’re all excited to see how the first edition goes down.
