WATCH: Jhye Richardson Bowling With Torn Shoe

Returning to the Australian Test side, it was a brilliant comeback for pacer Jhye Richardson who bowled 3 maidens on the trot in the 1st innings of the 2nd Test at Ashes 2021/22. It was the third Test of his career and at the time of writing this (England 157/4), Richardson may have still been wicketless but he hit the headlines anyway…

Firstly, he was in the news yesterday when he came out to bat and tried to launch his first ball for six. He got 3 runs from it but he didn’t miss out on his second ball, smashing it over the deep mid-wicket boundary for six. Now when he was out bowling in the second session of Day 2, slow motion replays showed Jhye bowling with a torn shoe, and we can only imagine why he didn’t go on to change the pair.

The slow motion replays also showed some taping around the front part of his left shoe, which means he already knew that the shoe was giving way, (or already had given way) but he decided to field the pair anyway. We may think that he really loves the comfort of these shoes or the comeback man is just a form believer of some superstitions.

May the shoes he wore when he bagged a 5-fer in a recent Shield game?! We’ll never know until he’s asked about it. In the meantime though, his video has gone viral on social media where as he ran in to bowl, his big toe popped out of the shoe and burst through his socks as well. Surely, it can’t be comfortable bowling like that?! See below:

Coming to the status of the match, England were building a good response to Australia’s 473/9 and went wicketless in the first session. However, they lost both set batsmen Joe Root and Dawid Malan early in the post-dinner session and suddenly, Australia was back in the driver’s seat to win and go ahead 2-0 in the Test series.
