Isuru Udana Calls Time on International Career

Now 33 years of age, Isuru Udana has been around since ages, one would think. He’s always been in an out of the national side and one can even argue that he wasn’t backed as much as others have been. Never given a continuous chance at the highest level, Udana never managed to show his true potential and today, he finally decided to announce his retirement from all forms of international cricket.

Having played for 20+ franchise teams in various T20 leagues across the world including the cash-rich IPL T20 League, Udana is super experienced and is handy with the bat as well. Most recently, he was seen in the home ODI and T20I series against India, where he played a total of 3 games and ended wicketless in all those games.

His recent lack of form is also probably another reason that contributed to making this decision, while he promises to be available for other domestic T20 leagues and franchise cricket. He bagged a total of 45 wickets in 56 international games (ODIs and T20Is) and that’s not a true representation of how good a bowler he is, with a number of variations in his armoury at all times.

“Cricket was, is and always will be my greatest love and I have always given my 100% both on and off the field, respecting and upholding the spirit of cricket and national pride always. However, I believe the time has come, for me to retire from international cricket in order to make way for the next generation of players,” said Udana in a statement.

He took to his verified Twitter account to post a note of appreciation and a ‘Goodbye’ to international cricket. Tonnes of comments came in wishing Udana the best for the rest for his cricketing aspiration, which includes him featuring in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) which is scheduled for late in August 2021 as well.
