Ishan Kishan Replaces KL Rahul in WTC Final 2023 Squad

We’ve seen a real shocker of a decision coming through earlier this afternoon as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has gone on to announce Ishan Kishan to be drafted into the Test squad for India’s upcoming World Test Championship 2021-23 final against Australia, scheduled to take place between 7-11 June 2023, in England.

We’re calling it a shocker of a decision because Kishan is an uncapped player in the longest format, and hasn’t been considered to play Tests for India in the past either. This news comes a few days after India’s vice-captain KL Rahul was ruled out of the rest of IPL 2023, as well as the upcoming 2023 WTC Final, due to an injury in the current IPL season.

He’s in content also because India’s main wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant met with a horrific car accident a few months ago, and he’s still undergoing rehabilitation for the same. KS Bharat is the main wicket-keeper in the squad right now and considering he played all 4 Tests against Australia recently, he’s likely to start here in the WTC Final 2023 in London as well.

The obvious choices that BCCI also had were Sanju Samson and Wriddhiman Saha as these two are going great guns in IPL 2023 and they’ve played a bit at the highest level as well. However, the board decided to go with the 24-year old Kishan, though it’s unlikely that he will get a  go in this all-important final against the mighty Aussies.

Suryakumar Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar have been announced as the stand-in players for the 2023 WTC Final, and we think that Ruturaj could’ve also been the right replacement for Rahul, as the latter was anyway playing in the team as a frontline batsman, and wouldn’t have been donning the gloves. See Mufaddal Vohra’s announcement on the same on Twitter:

In his First Class career, Kishan has managed 6 centuries in 48 games where he scores at a mid thirties average. In the ongoing IPL 2023 season, he’s got as many as 293 runs in 10 games where he opens the batting for Mumbai Indians. He’s got 2 fifties in this season so far and has been in decent touch, but we wouldn’t think it was good enough to make it to the WTC Final squad.
