Today is a day of celebration for Irish Cricket as they have just few minutes ago completed a historic victory in international cricket. There hasn’t been live cricket in this venue for over 2 years and when they played the 1st ODI against South Africa, there were rain interruptions which led to the game being abandoned.
However, when they took the field today in the 2nd ODI at The Village in Dublin, they were exception. They started slowly but steadily, creating big partnerships and captain Andy Balbirnie went on to score his 7th ODI ton, leading from the front. They put up 290/5 in 50 overs and they knew a little bit of good bowling would’ve given them a victory.
While the visitors started briskly in the chase, there were a few quick wickets and from there, wickets fell at regular intervals and none of the batsmen could support Janneman Malan who scored 84 batting as an opener. With the ball, the hosts were impressive and they well deserved the win that was coming.

Eventually, it was too much for the South Africans, with all six of the Irish bowlers picking at least a wicket each. A brilliant performance with the ball saw Ireland bowling out their opponents in the 49th over, securing a 43-run victory. It was truly a historic moment as they beat South Africa for the first time in their ODI cricket history.
In the past, they’ve beaten England, Pakistan, West Indies and even Bangladesh, today securing another victory against a big fish in the international circuit, while also gaining 10 important points towards the ICC ODI Championship. The small crowds in attendance were jubilant as ‘Sweet Caroline’ started playing across the stadium.
