The Indian Premier League (IPL) is heating up as for the first time ever, they’ve expanded into 10 teams for the upcoming season. In October 2021, the organising committee announced that two new teams will be added to the tournament from IPL 2022 onwards – Lucknow & Ahmedabad. And we’ve been hearing a lot of updates from these two new teams in recent weeks.
In the past weeks, Lucknow has been making a lot of announcements about their team and management, naming their coach in Andy Flower, mentor in Gautam Gambhir and most recently, they named three players in the IPL Player Draft. And now finally, they’ve announced their team name on social media after running a competition to get suggestions from their fans. Read below for details…
New IPL team – Lucknow Super Giants
They had asked people on social media to find a name for the Lucknow IPL franchise and this is something that had never been done before in IPL history. And that’s what they ran successfully before a decision was made, naming their team as Lucknow Super Giants. And immediately, they received likes and retweets on their posts on social media.
They three players they signed in KL Rahul, Ravi Bishnoi and Marcus Stoinis have all been a part of the Punjab franchise in the past and that may just be a coincidence, or the fact that the coach is picking players from there, as Andy Flower was assistant coach of Punjab as well. The only announcement left to make was that of the team name, and that’s now done as well.

The announcement post on social media came with a picture of the team logo, along with the caption, “And here it is, Our identity, Our name…. #NaamBanaoNaamKamao #LucknowSuperGiants @BCCI @IPL @GautamGambhir @klrahul11” Prior to this, there were speculations of Lucknow Nawabs or Lucknow Gladiators going to be the team name.
For those who don’t know, the Lucknow franchise is owned by the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group which also owned the Rising Pune Super Giant franchise in past editions of the IPL. And it’s no surprise that they went on to give the Lucknow IPL team a similar name, so as to keep the memory of the Pune franchise alive as well.

But remember, the name is just one part of the team. It’s the achievements and the performance on the ground that will count, so people won’t start judging this team based on their name. IPL 2022 is a major season for all the teams since there’s a mega auction before this edition, but it’ll be a very big one for Lucknow as it’s their first time in the IPL.
