Fortunately or unfortunately, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson always finds himself in the center of controversies. Finally, he found himself in the Indian squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup but back home in the IPL 2024 competition, he was involved in a very controversial decision, given OUT while playing a big hit, caught on the boundary.
He was taking Rajasthan home easily, playing away against the Delhi Capitals. Samson smashed 8 fours and 6 sixes before he was caught by Delhi’s Shai Hope on the boundary. It was immediately taken up to the TV umpire for a double check and while the rest of us all thought Hope’s leg touched the boundary line, the umpires had other ideas.

Samson was given OUT and had to trudge off the field, for a well made 89(46). However, he wasn’t too happy as he stayed back for a couple of minutes to argue with the on-field umpires. We don’t blame him because it clearly looked like the foot had touched the boundary cushion, and we immediately posted a poll on our Twitter account too:

Users on Twitter (X) already believe that the umpiring standards have been below par in IPL 2024 and here was just another example. Samson had to walk away as RR fans looked on in horror. They knew there was a lot at stake and that wicket of Samson was the most crucial one as well. Kumar Sangakkara in the RR camp looked on surprisingly too, from the dugout.

We’ve seen a few umpiring mistakes in the IPL over the years but this one came at a crucial time, and we believe that the third umpire should’ve taken his time before making the call. Samson tried to take a review when all hope was lost, but even that was too late as the DRS review needs to be taken within 15 seconds of a decision being made.

From there, we saw a flurry of wickets falling at both ends. Rajasthan were cruising at one stage and after the Samson dismissal, wickets fell and they were left with 29 runs to make in the final 6 deliveries.
