IPL 2023 – Heated Argument Between Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir

It’s been more than a decade that there’s been a rivalry between two Delhi boys, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir. And yet, there’s no respite at the Indian Premier League (IPL) as their rivalry continues. Today was a classy example as the duo got into a heated argument after IPL 2023 Match 43 between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

RCB scored only 125 in their 1st innings effort and then what followed was a brilliant fielding and bowling effort by the away team to walk away with an easy 18-run victory. And while celebrations were on a high, the match ended with an ugly moment between Virat and LSG pacer from Afghanistan, Naveen-ul-Haq. And former Indian opener and LSG mentor, Gambhir, decided to get into it himself.

Now Kohli is an Indian cricketing legend, admired by millions of people and sports fans across the world. We don’t think anyone is going to like if a young, Afghani fast bowler thinks he can charge the Indian icon and stir him up. This happened when the players were shaking hands after the game ended, and Naveen had to be held back by other players, while Kohli continued to walk on and greet the other LSG players.

See the video above for how Naveen and Kohli had a little word with each other before the former lost his cool and decided to charge on to Kohli. At that time, Glenn Maxwell was quick to pull Naveen away. Kohli then proceeded to have a word with LSG captain KL Rahul, who was listening to Kohli and discussing what just happened. Here, Naveen stopped and made another passing remark at Kohli, pretty distastefully.

Further, the drama continued as Gambhir joined the mess, reigniting a very old rivalry between these two. Many years ago when Gambhir was representing KKR, a similar fight took place after Kohli was dismissed, where Rajat Bhatia came in between the two to stop the fight. This time, it was the veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra who played the role of the peacemaker. See some more tweets on the issue:

And it turns out that this isn’t the first time Naveen has been caught in a tussle against a senior player, because he was involved in a very similar issue with Pakistani great Shahid Afridi, after a Pakistan Super League game. Clearly, it’s not good for his reputation that he goes to other countries to play cricket, and insult the ambassadors of the game in those nations itself.

Naveen had a great game, picking three wickets and bowling a great last over for LSG as well. However, his end-of-game antics would’ve lost him a lot of popularity. Overall, not what you expect from the gentleman’s game but we’re hoping everyone learns from this and moves on.
