The Hyderabad franchise has won the Indian Premier League (IPL) twice over the years, once under the Deccan Chargers franchise name which is now defunct and once more recently in IPL 2016 when they beat RCB in the final as Sunrisers. And here, we’re going to talk about this team again, and their team and squad composition for the IPL 2022 season this year.
The team is known as Sunrisers Hyderabad since a few seasons now and while they’ve always had a good squad, team management and morale is worrisome Last year, they were poor amidst lots of drama of Warner being sacked and benched, Manish Pandey receiving the similar fate and more recently, Simon Katich resigned after only shortly being hired in the coaching staff.

They went for a different approach for IPL 2022 retention as they kept two uncapped players from J&K in Abdul Samad and Umran Malik. One’s a big hitter and the other is one of India’s fastest bowlers, so both are players for the future who can shine for them. The third retention was that of Kane Williamson and we have no words for how talented this man is, and how well he can read a game.
They released Rashid Khan and unfortunately couldn’t get a like-for-like replacement for him at the IPL 2022 Auction. Instead, they picked up Washington Sundar who we think is a very versatile player, who can bowl in the powerplay as well as the death overs, and is a floater in the batting order as well. They may be super thin on the spin front though as their only other spin option is Shreyas Gopal.

Their buy backs at the 2022 mega auction included Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Priyam Garg, and Abhishek Sharma, and it’s safe to say that none of them have been in scintillating form of late, and none are likely to be major threats. But remember, they have a steady signing at the top of the order in Rahul Tripathi while if they need acceleration and more batting prowess, there’s Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram.
One of their better signings would have to be that of Romario Shepherd who first caught eyes in the Abu Dhabi T10 League last year but since then, he’s even made national appearances and has been doing well with both bat and ball. Talking about all-round performances, there’s Sean Abbott who won two games for Sydney Sixers where he picked up a 3-fer and scored runs as well in the recent BBL 11 season.

Abhishek Sharma is another local all-round option while everyone can keep their eyes open for South African bowling all-rounder, Marco Jansen. If there’s one place we think they will be lacking, it will be the genuine seam/pace bowlers, as they’re relying a lot on these bowling all-rounders and not specialists.
