The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been gaining popularity quickly over the years but this time, there’s a couple of new teams who have joined the fray and this is only the first time in the tournament’s history where there won’t be eight but ten participating teams in a single edition. And these two teams are the Lucknow and Ahmedabad franchises.
The former decided to brand themselves as the Lucknow Super Giants and they had a decent show in their first ever auction when the 2-day IPL Auction 2022 took place. For beginners, they seemed to know what they were doing and while they didn’t get all of the players they have on their wish list, they still did a good job in squad building ahead of the IPL 2022 season.
Lucknow Super Giants before IPL 2022 Auction
Prior to the IPL 2022 mega auction, the two new teams were allowed to pick a few players in the IPL 2022 Player Draft and Lucknow decided to spend the biggest chunk on their captain KL Rahul who went on to become the joint most expensive player in the history of the tournament, alongside Virat Kohli. The other two names they got from the player draft included Ravi Bishnoi and Marcus Stoinis.
And them, they had some smart buys in the auction too. While most teams have quite a few lesser known names or local players who haven’t been heard of yet, Lucknow Super Giants are almost full of known cricketers in their squad. They spent heavily and only bought 21 players in the IPL 2022 Auction, which was the minimum number of players that franchise teams had to reach in order to qualify for the season.

Lets give you one example of why we think they were wise at the auction. Last year, Krishnappa Gowtham became the most expensive uncapped player in IPL history when he was picked up for 9.25 Crore by CSK but here, Lucknow bagged him at just 90 Lakh. We think their pace bowling attack will be most talked about, signing the likes of Avesh Khan, Mark Wood, Dushmantha Chameera, and Ankit Rajpoot.
Additionally, they’ve got Jason Holder on the squad list and he’s been brilliant with the new ball for Sunrisers Hyderabad recently. In the T20 format, he’s useful with the bat too and his experience will help KL Rahul’s first attempt to secure an IPL title in the IPL 2022 season. The most talked about signings had to be Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya though as these two are known to be enemies off the field!
