Every year when the IPL Auction takes place, you don’t get to see the biggest names in cricket going under the hammer because they’re almost always contracted with a franchise or retained by one. However, it’s the IPL 2022 Mega Auction and here, even some of the best T20 franchise players in the world are being bid for, which makes this one of the most exciting auctions in the tournament till date.
Going into the event (IPL 2022 Auction LIVE updates), we knew that some players were going to attract a bigger paycheck than others, and one of them had to be Australian opener David Andrew Warner. Firstly, he’s been one of the most prolific run scorers in IPL history, with no player having got more IPL fifties than Warner and secondly, he’s loved by Indians and that helps any franchise grown their fanbase.
David Warner goes to Delhi Capitals for IPL 2022
Talking about the IPL 2022 Auction in particular, there were rumours and speculations about which team would go after him, but you can put all those rumours to bed now. The deed is done and Warner will now represent Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2022 season and onwards. However, he didn’t come cheap to this team as he attracted a whopping ₹6.25 Crore price tag.
We knew he’d be an expensive buy but he would’ve been a little shocked at the start, as Delhi Capitals bid the minimum price of ₹2 Crore for him and there weren’t any other takers initially. He was almost going to be sold until Mumbai and a couple of others also entered the fray. Chennai also entered and he was almost sold again for ₹4.80 until the bidding managed to continue again.

While we knew many teams would chase Warner at the IPL 2022 Auction, we were certain it wouldn’t be Sunrisers Hyderabad, after the way they dismissed him last season. Easily one of the biggest IPL legends till date, Warner took SRH to new highs including a IPL 2016 winning campaign but he was treated poorly last season, being benched through most of the season.
And just when you thought that maybe the 35-year old is done and dusted and his career is coming to an end, he went on to become the player of the tournament in the 2021 T20 World Cup and then went on to have a fine Ashes 2021/22 season as well. He peaked right in time and his stocks rose well in advance of the IPL 2022 Auction.
David Warner gets ₹6.25 Crore contract
He’s all set to represent Delhi Capitals now and there’s no other spot for him at the top of the order. Since his IPL debut in IPL 2009, Warner had only played for two franchises including Delhi Daredevils and the Sunrisers Hyderabad, so this will become his third IPL franchise, or you can even call it home as he’s played here before. When he left SRH, he left with a salary of ₹12.5 Crore, so this is in fact a demotion for him.
