IPL 2021 – Mumbai Indians Team Preview

IPL 2021 - Mumbai Indians Team Preview

  • Name: Mumbai Indians
  • Captain: Rohit Sharma
  • Head Coach: Mahela Jayawardene
  • Home Ground: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
  • Squad members: 25
  • Best result: Champions in IPL 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020
  • IPL 2020 result: Winners!

Every year, Mumbai Indians begins as one of the favourites to win the Indian Premier League. And almost every year, they’ve been delivering the results too now, with 3 titles in the last 4 IPL seasons. And though they’ve gone on to make a few squad changes ahead of the IPL 2021 season, we think they’re going to field a side very similar to the one that worked for them in IPL 2020, where they beat Delhi Capitals in the final.

The all-round team is spear-headed by three overseas pacers in Trent Boult, Adam Milne, and Nathan Coulter-Nile. Boult ended as the third highest wicket-taker in IPL 2020 and he’s a certain starter in IPL 2021 while Coulter-Nile is likely to be their second overseas pacer. NCN can swing the bat when needed and that’s maybe why he’ll be picked over Milne, the latter also having a dry BBL 10 in terms of wickets being taken.

Now these two bowling alongside Jasprit Bumrah could mean trouble for all oppositions. Bumrah was only second to Rabada in the wickets tally for IPL 2020 with 27 scalps to his name. In the first few games of a new season, he at times struggles to find his rhythm and now probably more so since he’s been out of action since a couple of weeks given his wedding and stuff. Back Boult to be their top bowler i you’re betting on this market.

Along with these two overseas picks in Boult and Coulter-Nile, Kieron Pollard is also a certain starter not only for his batting skills but his experience in leadership and just the fact that he’s winning T20 titles in franchise leagues across the world. Not to mention how electric he is in the field as well. Quinton de Kock had 4 fifties and a total of 500+ runs in IPL 2020 and there’s no doubt about him making the playing eleven either.

This means we might not see much of Milne and James Neesham, while Marco Jansen is also certain to be let out through the season. Neesham may be considered as a backup option for Pollard while there’s always Chris Lynn in case de Kock is finding trouble adjusting to conditions. In case MI is happy playing only one overseas pacer for this season, Lynn could come in to open alongside QdK but it’s unlikely given the strong top order.

The top order consists of Ishan Kishan who was their top scorer in IPL 2021 and he’s in brilliant form too, which was on show when he recently scored 56 on T20I debut for India against England. Like him, there’s the classy Suryakumar Yadav who scored 480 runs last season and was always calm under pressure which led to him making his international debut too, also scoring fifty in his first international innings.

This plus the fact that captain Rohit Sharma is in the lineup, it’s unlikely Lynn and Qdk will both be used together in IPL 2021! As you can see, Mumbai Indians are high favourites to complete a hat-trick of consecutive titles in this tournament but the price of 4.35 on Funbet is slightly on the lower side. Since they’re slow starters, we’d recommend you wait for a couple of losses and then back them once the odds are 5.5 or higher!

IPL 2021 - Mumbai Indians Team Preview - Hardik Pandya

In the spin department, Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar are likely to be the go-to players. With a wide variety of bowling options, we don’t really see Jayant Yadav and Anukul Roy getting much of game time in IPL 2021. The purchased Piyush Chawla in the IPL 2021 Auction and they might even consider him ahead of Chahar because of all his experience. However, it’s unlikely that they play all three in the same game.

MUMBAI INDIANS IPL 2021 squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Trent Boult, Adam Milne, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Kieron Pollard, Quinton de Kock, Chris Lynn, James Neesham, Marco Jansen, Aditya Tare, Anmolpreet Singh, Anukul Roy, Dhawal Kulkarni, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrah, Jayant Yadav, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Suryakumar Yadav, Mohsin Khan, Saurabh Tiwary, Piyush Chawla, Yudhvir Charak, Arjun Tendulkar.

Let’s not forget about Hardik Pandya who is a vital part of the Indian national side and he’s matured as a cricketer with both bat and ball, so he’s going to surely light things up. Marco Jansen who we mentioned earlier got popular because he bowled Virat Kohli and he may be brought on for a game or two as a surprise element as not many teams will know about him.
