Reaching the 3-figure milestone is a very big deal for any batsman in cricket, regardless of what the format is. But it’s most special in the T20 format because players have fewer deliveries and the pressure of being able to score fast in this format. That’s why you don’t see many centuries being scored in the T20 format, and more so in big global events like the ICC T20 World Cup.
This tournament began back in 2007 and since then, a handful of players have managed to get to a magical T20I century in the World Cup. Some of these players also feature in the list of most runs in the T20 WC history, while others don’t. We’ve put down a complete ICC T20 World Cup centuries list which you can see below for all details…
At the start of the 2024 T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies, we had as many as 11 individual centuries in this tournament’s history (last updated 25th May 2024), with a total of 10 unique centurions and the only one to score multiple centuries in this competition being the Universe Boss, Chris Gayle, getting his T20 World Cup centuries in 2007 and 2016.

The first ever century in the history of the T20 World Cup came from the bat of Gayle itself, smashing a ton in a high scoring game in the inaugural edition of this tournament, back at the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa. He scored it against the host nation at Johannesburg and while he is the first to get a century and first to two T20 WC centuries, he’s also the only one to have scored a ton in vain on the T20 World Cup all centuries list:

Gayle’s second T20 World Cup century which came in 2016 was the fastest of the lot on this list, getting there in just 48 balls, while the highest T20 World Cup individual score is that of New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum who smashed 123(58) against Bangladesh in the 2012 T20 World Cup, at Kandy. West Indies, England, and New Zealand are the only nations to have multiple entries in the T20 World Cup centuries list.

As the editions kept taking place, the ICC expanded the T20 World Cup format to having 16 teams instead of only 12 which means a lot of qualifier games and as time goes by, we’ll see more batsmen writing their names in this T20 World Cup centuries list because we expect more games against non Test-playing nations, the way Tamim Iqbal hit a century against Oman in the 2016 T20 World Cup, at Dharamshala.
From 15 for 3 from 4 overs to 162 for 6 from 19.4 overs – Thanks to Glenn Phillips with 104(64)

It’s surprising to see that Australia hasn’t got a single entry in the T20 World Cup all centuries list so far. Gayle missed on getting his third entry with a score of 98 in 2010 while 98* from Mahela Jayawardene also in 2010 meant he could’ve got a second entry here too. Luke Wright was the most unfortunate not to feature here, with 99* against Afghanistan in 2012.
