It was July 2019 that England ended a 40+ year wait to win their first ever ICC 50-ver World Cup. The players from that squad were ecstatic and none of them would’ve felt such highs ever in their careers or lives thus far. It was even more special for wicket-keeper Jos Buttler who had a great tournament and was then the man in the spotlight in the winning moment, having to whip off the bails to secure victory in the super over!
Less than a year later, they’re all off those highs and we’ve reached super lows now as the world is suffering because of the coronavirus outbreak. UK in particular has been tremendously impacted and Buttler realized he needed to do something to help his country. That’s why he put out his World Cup final jersey, signed by everyone who played that final, for auction on Ebay to raise some funds for COVID-19 relief.
A total of 82 bids made its way to Ebay for that piece of memorabilia and people followed it excited as it kept hitting new highs. Eventually, it ended up fetching a massive sum of £65,100 (~INR 61.5 Lakh) after the deadline on 7th April. All the proceeds from this went to two London heart and lung special hospitals, Royal Brampton and Harefield Hospital.
In such trying times, these initiatives will go a long way in helping those affected and those in need. After putting up this idea on Twitter, quite a few fellow cricketers were inspired by Jos Buttler, and it wasn’t long before AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli decided to auction off some their own personal belongings from a special match.
