Harshal Patel – First to Bowl Consecutive Wicket Maidens in the IPL

They’re looking like a much better side in IPL 2022 so far. Yes, they lost their first game of the season but remember, their batsmen put up 200+ before going on to lose to Punjab Kings. And suddenly, Royal Challengers Bangalore looked a million times better as they moved out to play IPL 2022 Match 6 which was their second game of the season, this time against Kolkata Knight Riders.

While Faf du Plessis was the individual hero in their first game with his score of 80+, it were the bowlers who did brilliantly in their second game against KKR. Here, Wanindu Hasaranga from Sri Lanka ended up 4/20 in his spell of 4 overs, which changed the game. However, last year’s Purple Cap winner was the one who broke some records – Harshal Patel.

In IPL 2022 Match 6 between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders, Harshal Patel became the first to get two consecutive wicket maidens.

IPL 2022 – Harshal Patel gets consecutive wicket maidens

He ended with 32 scalps at the end of IPL 2021 and here, he continued just the way he left off last season. He was bought back by RCB for a record 11+ Crore and Patel proved why he’s being paid so much. He was introduced only in the 12th over of the innings and a KKR that was already in trouble saw further trouble as Patel bowled a wicket maiden, getting rid of Sam Billings in that particular over.

He came back to bowl the second over of his spell in the 14th over of the innings and this was a tricky one for him, as he was bowling to a muscular Andre Russell who was looking to clear the rope with every ball he faced. And after building a little bit of pressure with four consecutive dot ball, he got Russell caught behind on the fifth ball and bowled yet another wicket maiden.

By doing so, he went on to become the second ever bowler in the history of the Indian Premier League to bowl two maidens in a single spell. The previous and only other person to do so was RCB teammate Mohammed Siraj who in fact did so against the same opposition, playing KKR back in IPL 2020.

However, what makes Patel’s record better is that while Siraj got two maidens in his spell, Patel bowled two wicket maidens to begin his spell, and that hasn’t been done before in the tournament. Eventually, he gave three runs away in his third over and didn’t even get a wicket there, taking his match figures to 3-2-3-2.

He came on to bowl his final over when the final two batters were out at the crease and you’d imagine that it wasn’t too tough for him to go on to finish off proceedings. However, he was hit for a couple of boundaries and ended with 4-2-11-2 in what still remains a fabulous IPL spell that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
