When IPL 2021 began in Indian earlier this year, we were treated to a delightful game between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. While the former were clear favourites to win, it was RCB that ended on the winning side and they began their IPL 2021 campaign in big style, getting an important 2 points against the defending champions. Man of the Match?! Harshal Patel.
Now in a team like RCB which boasts a few big names and international cricketers, you wouldn’t expect a uncapped player like Harshal Patel to come in and turn the tables, but that’s exactly what he did in IPL 2021 Match 1 in Chennai. He picked up a bunch of wickets in the 20th over of the Mumbai innings and ended up with a maiden IPL 5-fer, which you can read more about here.

He ended with 5/27 and everyone thought this was a one-time wonder from Harshal, but it was not at all. He had a brilliant IPL 2021 season, picking wickets in every game and having a dream season. It was way back in 2013 that Dwayne Bravo won the Purple Cap for the most wickets in that season, bagging 32 scalps, which remained an IPL record for 8 years after that season.
The question kept being asked towards the end of IPL 2021, of whether or not Harshal would end up breaking this record set by DJ Bravo so many seasons ago. He started today’s IPL 2021 Eliminator with 30 scalps and needed a couple more to tie the record with Bravo. He picked a wicket in his first as well as second over and equalled the record tonight.
In the final over of his spell, Harshal was set to break the record when he bowled a slower ball to Sunil Narine, with the latter skying it. However, Devdutt Padikkal dropped the catch and Harshal was unable to go ahead and create history. RCB won’t even get another chance as they lost to KKR in this Eliminator.
