2021 T20 World Cup – England Team Preview

  • Name: England
  • Captain: Eoin Morgan
  • Head Coach: Chris Silverwood
  • Squad members: 15+3
  • Best result: Champions in 2010
  • WT20 2016 result: Runners-up

Here’s a team that hosted and won the last major ICC tournament that took place. It was July 2019 when England merged victorious in the 2019 ICC World Cup after beating New Zealand in a closely fought final. Captaining the side is someone who hasn’t got a fifty across formats and tournaments since months and Eoin Morgan even got only 37 runs in 7 games in the UAE leg of IPL 2021, up until Eliminator 1 against RCB in Sharjah.

However, he surely knows how to captain a side and expect them to come out all guns blazing, at all times. The side will miss their most genuine all-rounder in Ben Stokes who wasn’t in the England squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup after announcing an indefinite leave of absence from cricket. They’re also going to have to do without all-rounder Sam Curran who picked up a lower back injury while at IPL 2021 in the UAE.

Clearly lacking all-rounders, there will be an added burden on the shoulders of Moeen Ali who by default will then have to be a part of the first-choice eleven, especially while playing at a ground like Sharjah, where spinners have had a very clear advantage in IPL 2021. However, Morgan will have to use him as well as we saw MS Dhoni using him in the Indian T20 League, which has really brought out the best in him.

England is playing three specialist wicket-keepers in Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, and Sam Billings. It’s likely that Billings doesn’t get much game time because the other two are in prime form. Bairstow got 240+ runs in just 7 games in IPL 2021 and had some brilliant scores in the 2021 Vitality T20 Blast. Another reason Billings will miss out is because England has found a great middle-order aggressor in Liam Livingstone.

With only 42 runs in 5 games in IPL 2021 in UAE, one would wonder if he hasn’t been able to accustom himself to pitches in this part of the world because prior to that, his scores were 46, 92* and 50 in The Hundred 2021 back in England. A couple of chances and if he still fails, enter Sam Billings Right at the top, Jason Roy also played a couple of brisk knocks for SRH in IPL 2021 and he’s going to be a massive threat as well.

This team just looks like they’re going to keep hitting blow after blow, with batting all the way down until #8 and #9. We’ve not even begun to talk about Dawid Malan who was one of the top T20I batsmen around the world last year and now, his place in the side is not even guaranteed. With the ball, the biggest talking point was the return of Tymal Mills to the English squad, having last payed a T20I in May 2018.

A once super threatening bowler, Mills lost his mojo but the last few months have been brilliant as he seems to have rediscovered himself. He had three 3-fers in his last 4 games in The Hundred 2021 and these pitches in the UAE may make him pretty dangerous as well, especially since he’s got a repertoire of variations in his kitty. They also have left arm pacer Reece Topley in the reserves but it’s unlikely he gets a piece of the fun.

Talking about the reserves, there’s one of England’s most consistent player at the domestic level and that’s James Vince. If there’s a substitution or injury in their top batsmen, expect him to get a go but we usually don’t see him getting past the thirties at the international stage. The likes of Chris Woakes and David Willey are brilliant bowling all-rounders and given the quality of this side, they may not get a go either.

ENGLAND T20 World Cup 2021 squad: Eoin Morgan (C), Moeen Ali, Jonathan Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Sam Billings, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Tymal Mills, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Tom Curran. RESERVES: Liam Dawson, James Vince, Reece Topley.

We’re expecting the starting bowlers to be Mills, Mark Wood, Tom Curran, and T20 specialist Chris Jordan. Among the spinners, Adil Rashid is a sure shot starter. He manages to get wickets for the side at all times and even though he didn’t get much of a go in the recent IPL 2021 in UAE, he’s sure to make a difference here. However, it’ll be tough for England to win with just one spinner when they play at the Sharjah pitch.
