It’s not very often that the bowlers walk away with top honours in limited overs cricket, especially in the T20 format. It’s mostly a batter’s game and amidst all the big six hitting, it’s difficult to notice some of the best bowling on display at times. Today on this page, we’re going to go through some of the leading bowling efforts in Canada’s leading T20 franchise competition.
We’re referring to the Global T20 Canada competition which was announced way back in 2018 and since then, they’ve completed two seasons successfully. Because of multiple hindrances, they were away for a while but now, they’re set to return with the 2023 Global T20 Canada tournament, four years after the last edition took place. Getting 5 wickets in a T20 game is very uncommon because bowlers only get 4 overs, which is 24 balls in a spell, but this milestone is certainly not impossible. In two seasons so far in this competition, only one 5-wicket haul has been accomplished and that came by the bowling of New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi, who represented the Brampton Wolves in the 2019 GT20 Canada season. He picked up a record 5/8 in 4 overs against the Montreal Tigers and we don’t think this record will be going away anytime soon, especially since he gave away only 8 runs in that spell.

On several other occasions, players managed to pick up 4-wicket hauls including as may as seven such spells in the 2018 GT20 Canada season, and five more apart from Sodhi’s 5-fer in the 2019 season. From these, only one player has picked up multiple 4-fers in the history of this tournament, with West Indian pacer Sheldon Cottrell picking both of his in the inaugural 2018 season.

It’s surprising that from the total of 13 occasions that a bowler has taken 4 or more wickets in an innings, 11 of them have been achieved by pacers and just the two by spinners, including Sodhi and Canada’s Saad bin Zafar. With so much of a history still to be built in this tournament, we are expecting quite a few more entries in this GT20 Canada 5-fers list, which is a very lonely one as of now!
