The 2019 Iberia Cup has been announced in Spain and the tournament will take place between 25-27 October 2019 between 3 teams – the hosts Spain, along with Gibraltar and Portugal. The last time this tournament was contested was in the 1990s and it’s a welcome return for the competition. The teams will play 4 matches each across 4 days in a round robin set-up, vying for the Iberian Cup.
Since ICC’s decision to grant all countries international status in T20s, this is the first time Portugal and Gibraltar will be playing a T20I, while Spain has in the past, having hosted games at this venue too. All squads have been announced and all games will be played at the La Manga Ground in Murcia. Only one game is scheduled on the opening day. Numbers
- Ravi Panchal in last T20I – 2/22 and 71* with the bat.
- Spain recently beat Finland 2-1 in a T20I series.
- Portugal – unranked in the ICC T20 Rankings.
- Spain – 45th in the ICC T20 Rankings.
Portugal
The side will be led by Paulo Buccimazza and the 38-year old has 54 runs to go with 6 wickets in his last 5 T20s for Portugal; pick him as all-rounders are the best picks in T20 cricket. Top order batsman Arslan Ahmed is among the few in the squad who played in Portugal’s last few T20s in September last year, having scored 4 and 49 in two games, which makes him a good pick too; he top scored in the country’s last international game.
Talking about all-rounders, we have Tariq Aziz who is a must-have in your fantasy team, probably as captain or vice-captain too. He’s one of the few in the squad to play 5 FC games as well. In his last 10 outings for Portugal, he has scores like 85*, 55%, 48 and 45, along with 4 wickets in his last 5 games. With scores of 15, 34, 10, 13 in his 4 T20 games for Portugal, Zohaib Sarwar is also a good pick.
Spain
Batting all-rounder Christian Muñoz Mills will lead the side and while he hasn’t bowled in his 5 T20Is so far, he picked 2/7 the last time he bowled for Spain against Estonia XI. My captain for today’s opening fixture is all-rounder Ravi Panchal who has 6 wickets and 143 runs in 5 T20Is, including 5 of them in his last 2 games itself. He was the leading run scorer in their recent series of 3 T20Is against Finland, and second on the bowling charts too.
The bowling leader in that series was 28-year old Paul Hennessy who also picked 6 wickets, with a total of 7 in 4 T20Is. While he hasn’t been as prolific with the bat as Panchal, he also has a best of 71 in his 4 games so far. Awais Ahmed is my wicket-keeper pick. While he had only 16 runs in 3 games against Finland, he has a top score of 102* in T20Is, which he scored against Malta prior to that series; pick these in your PlayerzPot (Use Code “READ1234”) fantasy team.
