New Zealand vs Bangladesh – 2nd Test Fantasy Preview

Given the fact that Bangladesh have never won a series in New Zealand and the fact that their last tour was winless and they were whitewashed in the ODIs before this as well, we weren’t really expecting much from the away team in the 1st Test. However, they came out with positive intent and looked good to go past 300 in the 1st innings until we saw them collapse from 207/5 to 234/10 – Classic Bangladesh.

However, lot of positives could be drawn from that game, even though they came into the series without Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, their most experienced campaigners. The 429 they scored in the 2nd innings and three centurions in the game speaks volumes. Now, the 2nd Test will be played at Wellington and a new challenge awaits the away team. Can they put up a better fight and at least scrape out a draw?

Stats

  • The ground has an age-old history, with its first Test being played back in Jan 1930.
  • New Zealand won by 7 wickets the last time these two teams played here – Jan 2017.
  • Bangladesh have lost all 3 of their previous Tests here.
  • 680/8d is the highest score here – NZ in 2014, while 300+ has never been scored in the 4th innings.
  • Ross Taylor has amassed a massive 1,026 runs here, including 8 fifties and 2 centuries.
  • Tim Southee has 34 wickets here; Trent Boult has 33.
  • 715-6 in the last game was New Zealand’s best ever Test score.

New Zealand

Look at the above stats and you’ll know that New Zealand is going to dominate this one as well. In the fantasy preview of the 1st Test, I made one mistake of making Ross Taylor captain. Look at his stats here. He still makes a brilliant pick, but we’re expecting another huge single batting effort from New Zealand. So, I would recommend a captain from the top 3 Kiwi batsmen. Coming out to bat after long partnerships before you is never easy.

Since Kane Williamson is a popular pick and more so after his double hundred in the last game, choose a captain between Jeet Raval and Tom Latham. Now remember, there’s a high chance that the home team may bat once but they will definitely be bowling twice, so you could always choose a captain in a bowler as well. I’d recommend Tim Southee or Neil Wagner, as Trent Boult is overly popular. No doubt, his swing is lethal with the new ball, but this is a risk you must be willing to take in order to make money.

Bangladesh

Woes will continue for Bangladesh as Rahim is still a doubt for this game. Now while they are the weaker side, they could’ve done much better in the 1st Test if there was a stronger bowling performance. There’s no way you can recover once your bowlers only manage 6 wickets in 163 overs. However, you can’t blame them since they are playing Abu Jayed, Ebadat Hossain and Khaled Ahmed, the most experienced being Jayed, who has 4 Tests to his name.

Once again, the pressure will fall on the spinners like Mehidy Hasan and the part-time option of Mahmudullah, and these two have to definitely be in your fantasy sides for this game. The lack of pace options is another reason I’ll be making one of the New Zealand openers my captain.
