Fans Yell ‘Hooda, La*da’ During 1st T20I vs Ireland

It’s very rare that Ireland gets to play the Test playing nations at home and 26th June 2022 was a big date for them as it marked the start of a 2-game T20 international series against India. Everyone was high in spirits and excited for the 1st T20I at The Village in Malahide, Dublin, from fans in the stadium to millions watching from around the world as well.

India started well too with three wickets within the first few overs itself but it was very disheartening to hear some bad behaviour from a section of the crowd in the stands. The commentators were complimenting the crowds for staying through all the rain delays but at that specific time, we heard a section of the Indian crowd hurling abuses at a single player.

Fans Yell 'Hooda, La*da' During 1st T20I vs Ireland

Crowd yells ‘Hooda, Lavda’ at Malahide

The boisterous section of the crowd was constantly heard yelling different things in an unruly manner. Once the powerplay was done and the players were allowed to stand outside the 30-yard circle, Deepak Hooda was one of the players who was sent to field on the boundary. And he was treated rather poorly by the Indian fans in the crowd.

At first, one would think the crowd was egging him on by yelling ‘Hooda, Hooda’, but it turns out the crowd was just being a bully. Or should we say it was just a few members from the crowd that did this. The chants of the player’s name turned out to be chants of ‘Hooda, Hooda, Lavda’ and for those who understand Hindi, you would know that this isn’t a pleasant thing to be yelling out at all.

Apart from this, we heard a lot of unnecessary yelling from this part of the crowd and it was constantly being captured on the crowd microphone, which was on right through the innings. We’re not sure if the stadium security went up to fine or escort the people involved out of the ground, but it seemed to go on for a long time.

It’s unfortunate that the crowd which has come out to cheer for and support our country, is the same crowd that’s abusing our national side players. It’s disrespectful and outright insulting, and such behaviour should be dealt with strictly whenever possible. Here’s a look at some of the reactions on Twitter after this incident:

As the game progressed, we heard the same crowd heckling other players as well. Poor, poor behaviour from our Indians in Ireland and we hope this doesn’t repeat in the 2nd T20I at the same venue, which is scheduled for 28th June 2022. Later, we even heard the crowd making fun of DK’s name by shouting ‘DK, Bh**dike’ and even heckling a woman doing an interview by the boundary!
