A few months ago, former England captain and 2019 ICC World Cup winner Eoin Morgan dropped a surprise decision of retiring from international cricket. However, we thought we’d have much more time to watch him in domestic tournaments. He did play a few, sure, but today he announced his retirement from every form of the game as well.
He started his career with Middlesex and played international cricket for Ireland as well, before making the switch to England and then going on to become one of the most iconic players in English cricket history. He ended his career with Paarl Royals in the inaugural SA20 League which recently concluded in South Africa.
Eoin Morgan retirement – all forms of cricket
“It is with great pride that I am announcing my retirement from all forms of cricket,” he said in a note he posted to his Twitter account. It was the starting line of a very emotional note which speaks about his journey from start till date, believing that now’s the right time to step away from the game that has given him so much over the years.
“I have cherished every moment. As there are in every sportsperson’s career, there have been highs and lows, but my family and friends have been by my side throughout it all,” he added, before going on to give a particular thanks to his wife, Tara, his family, and close friends who supported him unconditionally through his journey.

“Playing for franchise teams across the globe has given me so many memories that I will hold onto forever,” he added. Since his international retirement, Morgan said he was able to spend so much more time with his family and loved ones, and he plans to do more of the same in the time to come. Since it’s an instant retirement, we won’t be able to see him in action again or watch him in a farewell game.

Now 36 years old, Morgan played 7 games for Paarl Royals in the maiden SA20 League and that’s the last time he’ll take the field professionally. We saw flashes of the Morgan brilliance in that tournament, with one knock of 64 standing out among the rest. However, he isn’t as effective as he used to be and maybe it really is the right time to step away from the game.
In the Morgan retirement note on Twitter, he mentioned that he will continue to remain in touch with the game through international and domestic broadcast assignments, like most other England former cricketers have done in the past as well.
