Today was a crucial match at the ICC World Cup 2023 because it was India vs New Zealand and both these teams were the only unbeaten sides in the tournament prior to today. Top of the table clashes are always great to watch and this one was no different as India got two early wickets but Rachin Ravindra teamed up with Daryl Mitchell to stage a comeback with a 150+ run partnership for the third wicket.
Ravindra has been a revelation while Mitchell continued his good form in ODI cricket over the last 12-18 months. He brought up his 5th ODI century gave New Zealand a fighting chance, continuing his run scoring even after Ravindra was dismissed at the other end. And while he was going great guns at Dharamshala, a female commentator and former New Zealand cricketer revealed something funny about him.
Daryl Mitchell nursery rhymes while batting?
The female commentator who was talking about Mitchell was Katey Martin and she has been great to listen to during the CWC 2023 broadcast so far. She mentioned that while cricketers do various things to stay calm at the crease, Mitchell takes to singing nursery rhymes to keep his nerves in check while batting at the highest level.
Athletes often employ techniques to block out external distractions and channel their concentration to the present moment
Some concentrate on breathing, while others chew gum and focus on that
What does Daryl Mitchell do to concentrate? He sings nursery rhymes to himself and… pic.twitter.com/G6tEb6v0sU

While it was quite funny to listen to, Mitchell is a father of two kids and it’s actually really cute to know that kids’ nursery rhymes work for him while at the non-strikers end. We’ve seen Virender Sehwag singing to soothe his nerves and many other techniques used by cricketers around the world, but this was definitely a first – NURSERY RHYMES!

It’s very common for athletes around the world adopt methods that work for them to stay present in the moment, and nursery rhymes have definitely been working for Mitchell. Wickets were falling all around him but he stood tall at one end until the 50th over, going on to score his career best ODI score – 130(127) – and also taking New Zealand to a very competitive total of 273 all out.

No one could stop him except Mohammed Shami who picked up 5 wickets on his debut game at CWC 2023, getting Mitchell with a boundary catch with one ball to spare in the innings. We’re sure it’s going to be one hell of a chase but regardless of who emerges as victor today, Daryl Mitchell nursery rhymes is definitely going to remain one of the highlights of the day.
